Thanks for the tip. I will consider a solution (install second HDD into the hoster for main Urt servers...)

Modern HDD have quite good access times, so even on hi-load VM server they work OK. Bigger problem is total bandwidth of disk. All VM servers use some internal I/O cache so virtual servers with lot of small packets do not write constantly on HDD.

Im my job we use WD RE4 HDDs in RAID 1 with 5 virtual servers without performance problems. VM server is based on virtualbox, and host system is Ubuntu.

If you have I/O lags you should raise your I/O disk cache (and buy more RAM if is low).

BTW: UrT server use very few HDD resources, basicaly only for logs everything else can be in RAM.

I have for each urt server:
- games.log *
- qconsole.log **
- B3 log ***
- chat.log
+ write of every single hit and action into mysql
+ write of chat into mysql

* This should be set like this that B3 can re-read and act immediately:
set g_logsync "2" //enables/disables direct writing to the log file instead of buffered
set g_loghits "1" //log every single hit. Creates very big logs

** set logfile "1" //additional logging in seperate qconsole.log file. 1=buffered, 2=synced

*** <!-- How much detail in the logfile: 9 = verbose, 10 = debug, 21 = bot, 22 = console -->
<set name="log_level">9</set>

So... is it maybe much disk writing... :??:

No this is not huge load. How big are logs anyway?

Huge load is like 10000 lines/sec and more.

You can check basic disk I/O with "iotop" command (usualy "sudo iotop", install it with "sudo apt-get install iotop"). On host system run this command and watch which proces-s are on the top and how much bandwith are they using.

Usualy % of I/O is low for most of the PIDs (1-5%), if there is summa around 100% all the time and total disk write/read speed is low (lower then actual disk speed), then you have performace problems (write/read delays).

You can check your disk "copy" speed with command "sudo hdparm -t /dev/sda", you get app. real speed if system is not under heavy load. You can also check this speed on your host and also on your virtual server, it should be similar if there are not limitations on VM server. Modern HDD average copy speed is from 80 to 130MB/sec.

Some weeks ago I got an old server and today finally I could install my sweet ubuntu on it.
This hardware is HP Proliant ML330 G3, 2 x Xeon CPU + 1.5GB RAM.

This will not at home here where all others are, so I don't care about the noise and consuption.

I will inform you about its IP. This will be perfect for test servers, etc.

Yes maybe when I would start it, would apply an i7.
But we already have the hardware.
What I thought on, to move the next virtual server to a physical: the webserver.
Then only 2 servers would left as virtual: the two urt hoster linuxes.

OK I found this topic, and this seems to be a good place to notice here the 2013 planned projects:

- power up BNC server (suggestion of puska)
- power up mumble server (suggestion of Cthulhu - it was up already, but didn't function, now it is stopped, project sleeps)
- update TS3 server
- update KRH main website and/or fix file upload problem

and not least but last:
- replace current ESXi hoster hardware to i7 (and more ram and more drives)

This last one needs a serious investment (and work), all other need just time and work.
Any help appreciate! Thanks!

Dear Players!

I would like to anounce you all the happy news, that our valued player Horsty sent us a significant donation again: 100 Euros, so I can't by-pass a server upgrade anymore! XD
If you ever considered to donate our work and efforts, it is a great opportunity now, because a new server costs a lot. As you can see, you will not waste your money when donating!
Our clan was founded in 2009 and since then we worked a lot that you can have fun our servers.
All the technical details you can find below more information about the plans and/or you can share your thoughts or questions and you can help us designing the server configuration if you are expert (in hardware, virtualisation with VMWare ESXi, Ubuntu, CentOS, etc).

Thank you for your attention!

Thank you for very good Urban server !!! (and other servers, but i'm only play urban :)

Server config :
The I/O performance will be enough for those servers and applications ?
What kind of hdd and controller will be those ? sas ? ssd ? scsi ? sata ? 10k 15k ?
hot swap ? 2,5" 3,5" ? some raid ?

Becouse I have got some HP scsi disc that I'm not use, and in this topic earlier I read about a HP server...

I think cpu and ram is very good, but 2 hdd maybe the bottleneck, but it depends on the running applicaion...

For server stop/start remote :
Workoround solution, a simple web (php...) interface with some authentication (https), remote user can change a sign/value, and on the server a script read this sign periodically (from crontab) and start/stop service depends on the sign.

I think the HDD will be OK, both are SATA3 7200rpm. For the start/stop think I don't have a ready solution yet, would be helpful to show/send me that.
Currently I start/stop servers with a batch file in "screen" by hand.

Thanks

I would like to say a big thank you for the donations in the mean time for:

Blaz K about 10USD (2500HUF)
Utisevalec about 10USD (2500HUF)

Thank you very much again, every cents helps us to have a lagfree server ASAP!

I have as other possibility if you don't have/like Paypal account the solution of money transfer.

And in the case you don't have a credit card I will try to apply "paysafecard" payment on our homepage, but need some help, didn't find solution yet, how to set up on the homepage to accept payments.
